RoHS stands for "Restriction of (the use of certain) Hazardous Substances".
There is already a third version of this directive. 2015/863 (RoHS3) was introduced on 31 March 2015. It superseded Directive 2011/65 (RoHS2), which had been in force since 8 June 2011. Before that, Directive 2002/95 (RoHS1) had been in force since 27 January 2003.
This single market directive applies in the same way to all EU member states and must not be interpreted differently.
The directive restricts or prohibits the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and phthalates, and defines limit values for certain ingredients in electrical and electronic equipment.
These include large and small household appliances, IT and telecommunications devices, consumer electronics devices, lighting fixtures, electrical and electronic tools, toys and sports and leisure devices, automatic output devices, and electric light bulbs and household lights.
RoHS compliance is also a prerequisite for CE marking for an electrical product.
