Cable Management System for Passenger Boarding Bridge, Gangway & Jet Bridge

What is passenger boarding bridge?

A passenger boarding bridge, also known as a gangway, jetway or jet bridge, connects the airport building to the aircraft. One part is fixed to the building, while the other part can move to adjust to different aircraft sizes and door heights. The bridge usually consists of telescoping tubes and lifting units, making it flexible for various aircraft. Electric motors move the bridge, requiring power and data cables, which must be protected from damage and weather as they are often outside the gangway.

Benefits of igus products in passenger boarding bridges

As aircraft downtime decreases and passenger boarding bridges need to operate reliably, smooth mechanical movement is crucial to avoid financial losses for airport operators, airlines, and passengers. igus products are highly reliable for use in passenger boarding bridges, with e-chain systems ensuring safe cable movements in both horizontal and vertical strokes. These durable e-chains offer a long service life, space-saving installation, and can supply all necessary energy types, including power, control cables, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
e-chain systems cut cable lengths by over 50% and protect cables from external damage like rocking and jamming. They require low maintenance, reducing downtime. Paired with igus chainflex cables, they withstand heat, sun, rain, and snow.

Passenger boarding bridge with energy chain

Modern energy chain system at Cologne/Bonn airport

To ensure that the cables that supply the jet bridge control system as well as the aeroplane are routed safely for the future, eight passenger boarding bridges were retrofitted in succession at Cologne/Bonn airport and modernised to last the next few decades.

e-chains replace festoonings at airport in Utah

Here, e-chains are used for the cable guidance at passenger boarding bridges that are slid one above another in a telescopic way. They are replacing previous festooning systems, which proved to be unreliable. When side-mounted, these chains are also particularly compact.
